Speaking: SXSW 2014

I went back to SXSW this year to present on the topic of Startup Opportunity Evaluation with Sonya (co-author). We’ve continued to work on developing and refining the strategy frameworks first introduced in The Smarter Startup book, and this was our first opportunity to discuss these new frameworks in public.

The talk was well received and we received universally positive feedback both in person and on twitter. Below is our slide deck and a few video clips from our talk:

In this video I discuss the Startup Heuristics model:

In this video segment, I’m discussing a systematic approach for ideation and evaluation:

Speaking: Product Manager Survey

At the ProductCamp.LA event this year, I presented the results from a study done by the Product Managers group I organized here in town. The survey compiled the professional profiles of 78 LA area digital product managers to help the group better understand the context of their own industry. We looked at details such as what part o town everyone works in, average earnings, and education profile. Ultimately this information was distilled into a persona of the typical LA Product Manager.

Speaking: WebVisions

I spoke at WebVisions this week in Portland, Oregon. It was a lot of fun to be able to go back to the town I grew up in and to present my work in that context. Even better, a friend from high school was sitting in the audience for my talk – small world!

I was new to this conference series but enjoyed meeting quite a number of talented and interesting thought leaders in online user experience and innovation. I presented the startup strategy framework that I’ve been
working on this year and took in a few talks on user experience research and design.

Speaking: iDate 2014

This year, iDate was in Los Angeles and I was asked to come back to share my experiences having built and sold a dating property, and to share a few highlights from the book. In 2005 I attended the iDate conference (for the online dating industry) in Miami Florida as I was working on a startup called eRomance.com at the time. I thought it would be fun to go back and check out the industry and share what I could and so I agreed.

DocStoc Video Series

DocStoc invited me to talk about the startup and product strategy as part of their video experts series. It was a lot of fun to see their studio and process for recording, though I have to say, it was a lot harder than I expected; Being in front of the camera or 2 hours straight can be intimidating!

Here are the videos I did while I was there, in a YouTube playlist (one after the other):

Speaking: Book Premiere

sxsw2013This week I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to debut my new book, The Smarter Startup, at South By Southwest, in Austin Texas. The book officially hits the shelves just two days after my presentation and book signing, though Pearson worked with the Convention Center bookshop to make sure the book was available early of the festival.

I didn’t have much time to spend at SXSW this year unfortunately (flew there and back the same day) but the energy level was amazing. The turn out for my talk and the book signing was also not bad. I hope to spend more time enjoying the conference next year.

I also sat down with TechZulu and a couple others to discuss the book while I was there:
